Although it might seem like we have the same weather all year round, it’s not true at all! Changes in wind speed and direction have a large impact on the sea and what you can do, see our monthly calendar below for details:
Swahili coastal trade winds
Kusi A mainly southerly wind blowing for approximately 6 months.
Kaskazi Blowing from the northeast to the southwest for approximately 4 months.
Matalai (Transitional period) the change of wind from Kusi to Kaskazi – a period of occasional showers and little wind
January:
Sunshine as usual!
Rain: None
Temperature: 30°C
Wind: Kazkasi, north east trade wind. Calm mornings wind picks up in late afternoon and night
Activities: Fishing – Marlin run as well as regular fishing to be enjoyed. Seas are a little rough. Wind sports -Perfect winds averaging 15-35 knots
February:
Sunshine as usual!
Rain: None
Temperature: 31-34°C
Wind: Kazkasi, can blow through February but generally settles by the middle.
Activities: Fishing – same as January. Wind sports to be enjoyed. Water is clean, great for snorkelling/diving
March:
Sunshine with less wind
Rain: None
Temperature: 32°C
Wind: Matalai, a gentle easterly breeze.
Activities: Fishing – good as before. Little to no wind sports. Diving and snorkelling fantastic.
April:
Sunshine. Hot build up toward monsoon change at the end of the month
Rain: light showers end of April
Temperature: 33°C
Wind: Matalai, gentle easterly breeze
Activities: fishing – good as before. Little to no wind sports. Diving and snorkelling fantastic
May:
Monsoon generally change, sunny days with afternoon showers. Island lush with greenery
Rain: heavy irregular showers
Temperature: 28°C
Wind: Kusi, south easterly wind. 12-18 knots
Activities: Creek fishing good. Wind sports good. Water visibility drops. Highest tide of the year – 4m, turtles nesting
June:
Rain showers on and off. Island lush and green all plants and trees flowering
Rain: Daily showers
Temperature: 27°C
Wind: Kusi, south easterly wind. Strong
Activities: Creek fishing good. Rough Seas. Turtles hatching
July:
Mid Monsoon. Squalls and rough seas, Sunshine in between. The creek is still protected.
Rain: Occasional rain storms
Temperature: 26°C
Wind: Kusi, south easterly wind.
Activities: Creek fishing good. Rough Seas. Poor visibility. Turtles hatching.
August
Sunshine, cool days, windy nights.
Temperature: 26°C
Rain: Occasional showers
Wind: Kusi, south easterly wind.
Activities: Good for wind sports. Poor visibility. Rough sea but good fishing. Turtles hatching.
September:
Sunshine, cool days, windy nights.
Temperature: 27°C
Rain: Occasional one minute showers
Wind: Kusi, south easterly wind.
Activities: Good for wind sports. Sea visibility better snorkelling good. Rough sea but good fishing. Whale sighting.
October:
Sunshine days and calm winds
Temperature: 27°C
Rain: None
Wind: Kusi, gentle south easterly wind.
Activities: Good for wind sports. Good visibility. snorkelling good. Beginning of the Sailfish run. Great fishing.
November:
Sunshine, warm days, light breeze.
Temperature: 29°C.
Rain: None
Wind: Matalai, gentle easterly offshore breeze.
Activities: Great visibility for diving and snorkelling Sailfish run fantastic fishing. Whale sightings and Turtle hatchings.
December:
Sunshine, warm days, light breeze, winds change middle of the month.
Rain: None
Temperature: 30°C
Wind: Matalai, easterly offshore breeze. Kazkasi, north easterly wind starts middle to late December.
Activities: Great visibility for diving and snorkelling Sailfish run fantastic fishing. Whale sightings. Good for wind sports.
